Midnight Mass
Christmas Eve of 1944, a village in cold, harsh winter time of Slovakia. Despite the joyful Christian holiday, citizens of Slovakia endure the cruel repression of Nazi occupation during World War II. Men, women, and children are being displaced and families threatened by death if they resist the occupation by the merciless, cruel soldiers of Aryan territorial aggression.
The Kubisovych family is struggling to survive the onslaught both physically and emotionally as the two soldier-brother/sons of the clan are on opposite sides of the battle lines, thus rendering the family into conflict. At Christmas Eve dinner which the family annually celebrates together, one of the sons brings home an injured and wanted refugee from the war after escaping a Nazi massacre. The resulting hunt by German Gestapo for the wanted escapee brings the intense conflict to the Kubisovych dinner table where the friction of the war and the prisoner creates havoc. Frustration and fierceness of the two son’s mindsets are fuel for the fire, as the parent’s try to deal with the schism of their family. Sharp-edged words become swords at the dinner table, escalating into internal and external carnage against what is supposed to be the “Silent-Night, Holy Night” of Christmas Eve.
